Your Customers Are Using AI Daily While Resenting Every Second of It — Here Is What That Means for Your Business

More than half the world says AI makes them nervous. One billion people used ChatGPT last month anyway. That contradiction is not a footnote to the current AI moment — it is the defining story of it, and it has direct consequences for every small and mid-size business trying to figure out where AI fits in their growth strategy.

According to MIT Technology Review's coverage of multiple major research reports, the numbers are striking and contradictory all at once. A Pew Research Center study found that more US adults now expect AI to have a negative impact on them personally and on society than expect a positive one, with pessimism running strongest among younger generations. A Stanford University report found that more than half of people worldwide say AI products and services make them nervous. In a Gallup poll conducted in May 2026, 71% of US adults said they would oppose a new AI data center being built in their community — a figure that exceeded the 53% who said they would oppose a new nuclear power plant. And in an NBC poll from March 2026, AI ranked as less popular than ICE. These are not fringe feelings. They represent a broad and measurable cultural pushback against the technology.

And yet. ChatGPT hit one billion monthly users in May 2026, according to market analysis firm Sensor Tower. Google DeepMind's Gemini logged 950 million users in July 2026. Pew found that half of US adults now say they use a chatbot regularly — more than twice the share who said so in 2023 — with one in four reporting daily use. Across all 38 OECD member nations, more than a third of adults say they used generative AI tools in the last three months, according to OECD data. Usage is not slowing down. If anything, it is accelerating while the resentment grows alongside it.

MIT Technology Review's Will Douglas Heaven offers a nuanced explanation for this contradiction. He argues that what people dislike is not the technology itself but the behavior of the companies behind it: the relentless, inescapable way AI is being pushed into every corner of daily life by trillion-dollar corporations. He draws a direct parallel to social media, noting that billions of people used Facebook and Twitter for years despite growing frustration with the companies running those platforms. The difference now, Heaven argues, is that there is more political and regulatory will to push back. All 50 US states have either passed or proposed laws governing AI development and deployment, producing more than 2,100 bills across the country — a tenfold increase in just three years.

For small and mid-size business owners, this nuance is not just interesting context. It is a strategic signal. Your customers are not rejecting AI tools wholesale. They are rejecting the feeling of being pushed around by faceless, hype-driven tech giants. That means the businesses that will win with AI are not the ones that shout loudest about using it — they are the ones that deploy it with honesty, clarity, and respect for the customer experience. If your AI-assisted email sequence, chatbot, or content workflow feels manipulative or opaque, it will land on the wrong side of this cultural divide. If it feels genuinely useful and transparent, it has room to build real trust.

This also has implications for how you talk about AI in your marketing. The backlash is real, and your customers feel it. Acknowledging that tension openly — rather than breathlessly pitching AI as a miracle solution — actually positions your brand as more credible. The businesses that earn customer trust right now are the ones that treat AI as a tool they chose carefully, not a buzzword they chase blindly. Consider how you frame AI in your customer-facing communications. Are you explaining how it helps them, specifically? Or are you just signaling that you are "using AI" because it sounds modern?

This week, go through one customer-facing touchpoint where you are using AI — an automated reply, a chatbot greeting, a generated email — and ask yourself whether a customer reading it would feel helped or handled. If the answer is handled, rewrite it with a clearer purpose and a more direct explanation of what the tool is doing for them. That single edit, applied with intention, is the difference between an AI implementation that builds loyalty and one that quietly erodes it.

Your customers are living inside this love-hate relationship with AI right now. The businesses that understand that tension, and design their AI strategy around it, are the ones that will still have those customers when the dust settles.
