Anthropic just released a sweeping analysis of how people are actually using its AI agent Claude Cowork, and the answer is striking: the tasks eating up the most time are the ones no one has an official job title for.

Anthropic analyzed 1.2 million anonymized Claude Cowork sessions from May 11 to 31, 2026, drawing from more than 600,000 organizations. To make sense of the data, an automated classification system sorted each session into one of 20 distinct work categories. What emerged was a clear picture of where AI is actually landing in real workplaces. The single largest category, "Business process and operations," accounted for 33.4 percent of all usage. That covers compiling scattered status updates into a single report, building onboarding checklists, and reconciling spreadsheets. The second largest category, "Content creation and copywriting," came in at 16.4 percent, covering drafts, slide decks, posts, and proposals. Together, those two categories represent roughly half of all Cowork usage. By comparison, software development accounted for just 8.7 percent, DevOps and infrastructure for 7 percent, and data analysis for 5.8 percent.

Anthropic describes the dominant use cases as "connective in nature." Spreadsheets pull scattered data into one place. Slide decks translate a decision for audiences with different levels of background knowledge. Onboarding checklists pass along an organization's institutional knowledge to new team members. The pattern also reveals how much the interface shapes behavior: developers who need to build and ship software continue to rely on Claude Code, Anthropic's specialized programming tool. Inside Cowork, those same developers shift to handling the communication and documentation tasks that surround their technical work. Anthropic illustrates this with three concrete examples: a lawyer having documents formatted and filed to free up time for legal analysis, a hiring manager using the tool to schedule interviews and summarize feedback, and a team lead having slides built around a tough decision so they can spend more time actually making it.

For small and mid-size business owners, this data carries a practical message. The tasks consuming your team's time are not the ones on anyone's formal job description. They are the status updates, the internal reports, the onboarding docs, the recap emails, and the presentation decks that somehow always end up on someone's plate at the worst possible time. These tasks are not glamorous, but they are constant, and they slow everything down. AI tools built around a familiar chat interface are now capable of handling this category of work at scale, for organizations of every size, not just enterprise teams with large technology budgets.

The Anthropic data also matters for how you think about marketing specifically. "Content creation and copywriting" accounting for 16.4 percent of sessions is not a coincidence.
