OpenAI Codex Just Learned to Watch Your Team Work Once and Do It Automatically From Now On
Imagine showing an AI exactly how you upload a YouTube video, complete with metadata, thumbnail, and subtitles, and then never having to do it again. That is not a concept or a roadmap promise. OpenAI just shipped it.
OpenAI released a new feature called Record & Replay for its Codex app on macOS. The mechanic is straightforward but significant: a team member walks Codex through a workflow one time, and Codex converts that demonstration into a reusable "skill." From that point forward, the AI agent can execute the entire workflow on its own, without any additional input. The YouTube upload scenario is the specific example OpenAI highlighted at launch. Record & Replay requires the Computer Use feature to be enabled, which became available in the EU on June 16. The full Record & Replay feature itself is currently not available in the EU, the UK, or Switzerland.
Version 26.616 of the Codex app also introduced bulk actions for the Automations history panel and the ability to hand off threads between a local and remote host, allowing tasks to continue on a connected machine. Codex is positioned by OpenAI as an AI agent built for coding and white-collar work automation. The app is free to download, but a paid ChatGPT account is required to unlock its practical capabilities.
For small and mid-size business owners, the implications here go well beyond software development. The phrase "white-collar work automation" is the one to hold onto. Any repeatable workflow your team performs on a computer, whether that is formatting reports, managing content uploads, updating CRM records, or processing routine administrative tasks, is now a candidate for this kind of AI-powered skill recording. You do not need to write code or configure integrations. You just do the task once, with Codex watching.
This also changes the economics of delegation. Right now, getting repetitive work off your plate means either hiring for it, training for it, or building a custom automation, all of which carry real costs in time and money. Record & Replay collapses that to a single demonstration. For a business owner running lean, that is a meaningful shift. It means your highest-value team members can stop spending time on high-frequency, low-complexity tasks and redirect that capacity toward work that actually requires judgment.
The marketing angle is equally real. Content operations, specifically the scheduling, uploading, tagging, and distributing of video and social content, eat enormous amounts of time in marketing departments. If your team is manually uploading YouTube videos with all associated metadata and assets, that workflow is exactly the type of process this feature was designed to eliminate. The ability to record that process once and let Codex handle it going forward is not a small efficiency gain. It is a structural change in how content pipelines can be staffed.
This week, identify one repeatable workflow your team performs on a computer at least three times a week. It does not have to be complex. It just has to be consistent. If you are on macOS with a paid ChatGPT account and Computer Use enabled, you are already positioned to try Record & Replay. Start with that one workflow, record the demonstration, and let Codex turn it into a skill. That single experiment will tell you more about where AI automation fits your business than any amount of reading about it.
AI is no longer something you configure once and monitor. It is increasingly something you teach by doing, and then it does the work for you. That shift is the foundation of every AI marketing and operations strategy worth building right now.
